ORGANIZATION: Waikiki Health

Waikiki Health is a non-profit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that has been in existence for 51 years. We provide quality medical and social services that are affordable for everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. We are currently seeking volunteers for our Friendly Neighbors program, which strives to enrich the lives of Oahu's elderly.

For more than two decades, our Friendly Neighbors program has provided assistance to the elderly in Waikiki and nearby areas. Volunteers focus on encouraging and assisting kupuna to live independent lifestyles, resume their daily activities, and to age-in-place in their own homes.

Friendly Neighbors offers two services- Attendant Care and Homemaker.

Attendant Care Volunteers:
-offer companionship to isolated and home-bound seniors
-engage the senior in conversation and activities
-provide friendly reassuring phone calls
-escort to medical appointments, grocery stores, etc.
-read and sort mail

Homemaker Volunteers:
-provide light house cleaning to seniors who are unable to do it themselves
-provide light meal preparation
-offer respite to the caregiver

Friendly Neighbors pairs each volunteer with a kupuna who has similar interests or compatible needs. We ask that volunteers commit to volunteering for at least one to two hours a week for at least three months, but we can be flexible. All volunteers must complete a screening process, including a background check, before they start providing services.

We are always looking for caring volunteers. With your help, we can provide that extra support that allows our seniors to continue to lead independent, fulfilling lives in their own homes. Whether you are looking to make memories, extend your ohana, gain experience, earn Service Learning credits, or give back to the community, we need you.

If you are interested, or would like to learn more about this program, please call or e-mail me at your earliest convenience.

Mahalo for your interest.

(Friendly Neighbors is partially funded by the State of Hawaii through the State Executive Office on Aging Kupuna Care Program administered by the Elderly Affairs Division, City and County of Honolulu.)

Mission Statement

The mission of Waikiki Health is to provide high quality medical and social services that are accessible and affordable for everyone, regardless of ability to pay.

Description

Waikiki Health Center, a private non-profit federally qualified community health center, provides medical and social services to people from all walks of life, representing a broad range of economic levels, cultural backgrounds, and medical needs.

We place special emphasis on serving at-risk, hard to reach populations, such as: Waikiki's runaway, abandoned, and homeless youth; older seniors who are "aging in place"; disadvantaged children who need immunizations and physical exams to enroll in school; the "working poor," who hold several jobs but still lack insurance; the underinsured, who are not covered for the medical services they need; homeless individuals and families; and people with HIV.

The majority of the Center's patients are living at or below federal poverty level, are uninsured or underinsured, and come to us for "safety net" medical care and social services.
