Are you a walking enthusiast with a love for connecting with your community? Do you enjoy exploring your neighborhood while sharing your passion for the health benefits of walking with others? Do you want to attend fun community events with a rad organization? Then this is the volunteer opportunity for you! Join Oregon Walks as a Walk Leader today!
Benefits of This Volunteer Role: Support Oregon Walks’ work while getting exercise and engaging with others who love to walk. Develop a knowledge of pedestrian issues, laws and best practices while growing your leadership, outreach, and general organizational skills. Increase Oregon Walks’ capacity to promote walking conditions that are safe, convenient and attractive for everyone throughout the Portland metropolitan region.
Volunteer Role and Responsibilities: A Walk Leadercoordinates with Oregon Walks staff to plan and execute walks based on specific project needs. They will assist the Volunteer Coordinator with mapping the walk route and vetting the route prior to scheduled walks. They will attend scheduled walks and greet and engage with walk participants, provide information about the organization and make sure participants sign in. Attend walk leader training and gain understanding of pedestrian laws and safety best practices.
Upcoming Walk Leader Opportunities:
- PPS Community Walks: May - Help improve the Portland Public Schools pedestrian network by doing a series of community walks to/ from schools and engage with participating families about their barriers to walking to school.
- NeighborWalks: May through September - Assistour partnership with AARP to ensure the NeighborWalks program is a success. They will support AARP Walk Leader volunteers in managing walks with large participation turn out by encouraging pedestrian safety and best practices.
- Walktober: Ocboter - Design, advertise and lead a walk of volunteer’s choosing on a theme of interest or in a specific neighborhood as part of Oregon Walks’ month-long walking event.
Time Commitment: 1.5 hr Walk Leader Training, 1-2 hrs Walk Planning, 1-3 hrs Scheduled Walk
Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator
Qualifications: Love for walking, ability toparticipate in short walk, approachable and professional demeanor.
