The Red Cross is mobilizing 40,000 volunteers to serve as relief workers in the areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Individuals will need to be available for immediate training and deployment to the affected areas. Qualified volunteers will be assigned as needed to serve for a period of between 10 days and three weeks. Individuals with disaster training are urgently needed and all volunteers must be ready to work under extraordinary circumstances.

The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
Description
The national headquarters of the American Red Cross provides assistance with shaping and leading the organization in our mission and strategic plan. National Headquarters also assists with technical guidance to the many Red Cross units, such as Chapters, Armed Forces Emergency Services Stations and Blood Services regions. These units are responsible for the direct service to the community including disaster response and preparedness, messaging to Armed Forces military and their families, collecting and delivering blood products, teaching health and safety skills and helping reunite families through our international services.
