The definition of "respite" is: a short period of rest or relief from something difficult. Senior Services’ Respite Program covering McHenry and northern Kane Counties is designed to provide a senior’s primary caregiver with a regular break from their duties to attend to their own personal needs. Respite service can help relieve burn out and help a caregiver recharge themselves. With the help of a respite volunteer, a caregiver is given the rare opportunity to focus on themselves for a few hours.
- Do you have 3 hours once a week to sit and chat, play cards, watch television, play a game or something similar with a senior citizen?
- Can you commit to 6 months of volunteering in this capacity?
- Are you senior-friendly?
As a respite volunteer, you will receive basic first aid training, ongoing support, "match" monitoring, and recognition for your service. You will not provide homemaker or medical services. As an RSVP volunteer, you can also qualify to receive mileage reimbursement and excess liability insurance. In addition, rewards of being a respite volunteer include:
- Explore new interests/hobbies or cultivate some new ones
- Develop new social skills
- Gain professional experience/Bulk up your resume
- Feel needed and useful
