Mission Statement
The American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) saves lives and reduces suffering for disaster survivors in the United States by engaging industry to supplement non-profit organizations’ logistics capabilities. We serve by coordinating logistics, providing education, and building cross-sector relationships before, during, and after disasters.
Description
ALAN partners with nonprofit disaster response organizations (voluntary organizations active in disaster - VOAD) and government agencies, connecting them to business capacity and know-how. Working together, we identify needs, increase efficiency, reduce duplication of effort, and promote an organized response to emergencies. Helping families and individuals rebuild is critical to our national resilience and security, and ALAN's whole-community approach makes a rapid recovery all the more possible.
Some 80 percent of disaster relief expenditures is spent on transporting, warehousing, and distributing goods and services to affected communities. But coordination is vital; in the past, relief organizations have found disaster staging areas clogged with donated items that they never requested. ALAN's strategy is to match assistance to specific calls for support. In turn, companies are assured that requests are vetted and can quickly determine where they can best help.
We believe that a coordinated response during crisis can save lives, reduce suffering, decrease economic losses, and promote rapid recovery for individuals, businesses, communities, and the infrastructure that binds them together. Time and again, our work has shown that business can step in to fill gaps in emergency response, providing warehouse and staging facilities, transportation, and other critical services and equipment.
