Found in Translation offers a free medical interpreter training to low-income bilingual women who are homeless or have been homeless in the past. Each year the women and their children represent a wide array of different cultures and languages. Our program participants must be fully bilingual in English and a target language.

One of the most important supportive services we provide is free on-site childcare playgroups during our program and any workshops organized throughout the year. Historically, over half of our participants are parents and many are single mothers. Often, this may be a major socioeconomic barrier to women interested in furthering their education. We depend entirely on volunteers to be able to provide free childcare playgroups so that our participants can fully participate in opportunities to further their education and professional development.

We are seeking energetic and enthusiastic playgroup leaders to supervise young children for our evening educational programming. Childcare volunteers ensure a fun, safe environment while their mothers are in training. This is a volunteer position that would require a minimum of 3 hours per week of in-person supervision. The children range in age from 1-12, so playgroup leaders must be adaptable, creative, and comfortable with a wide range of the children's needs and personalities. In the fall we have scheduled evening classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Boston Medical Center Yawkey Ambulatory Care Center and on Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm in Roxbury (exact location to be determined). The class will run from August 27 to December 7. We also have scheduled events on the 2nd Thursday of every month from 6 pm to 8 pm at 1532B Dorchester Avenue in the Fields Corner area of Dorchester. At present, we are in need of volunteers for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

The ideal candidate will be extremely responsible, independent, warm, friendly, culturally sensitive, and have experiences working with children. S/he will work in pairs with at least one other volunteer for a group of 4-10 children per shift, playing games, helping with homework, and enforcing all safety rules. S/he should relish in the unique opportunity to play a crucial role in the success of each Found in Translation student as they work towards furthering their interpreting education.

Mission Statement

To help homeless and low-income multilingual women to achieve economic security through the use of their language skills. To reduce ethnic, racial, and linguistic disparities in health care by unleashing bilingual talent into the workforce.

Description

Found in Translation is an award-winning nonprofit known for its innovation and effectiveness in turning social problems into opportunities. Our Medical Interpreter Certificate training and job placement program supports our two-fold mission.

Low-income communities are rich in bilingual talent. We identify promising candidates with limited economic resources and empower them to succeed in our program and in the interpreting profession. Our program is free of charge and includes common-sense supports such as on-site childcare, transportation assistance, mentoring, career coaching, financial education, job search assistance, and job placement.

Linguistic minority women may be at a double disadvantage, but Found in Translation helps them to capitalize on their existing strengths and use language as a unique competitive advantage to attain financial security and success.
