Position- Unaccompanied Minor Youth Mentor

Mentors are integral partners in resettling unaccompanied minors by providing extra care so that they may quickly become integrated into their new city. Through weekly visits, mentors will assist youths in realizing both personal and academic goals while also establishing a relationship that the mentor can look to as a role model that ensures their future success in Texas . As a mentor, you will become part of their support network by providing an introduction to American culture and customs and assist the mentee with educational opportunities.

As their mentor, you will ensure that that the youth is either meets with you weekly to complete a fun activity or enrolled in an extracurricular club. The goal is to make sure the youths have a positive outlet and friend as part of their new support system while adjusting to living in Houston.

Duties/Expectations-
 Be a strong friend: Assist a youth as a positive role model, actively support and encourage through extracurricular activities through engagement of community programs such as art, music, or sports

 Be able to receive constructive feedback from RST program staff

 Coach and encourage mentee through potential challenges and setbacks

 Communicate with RST staff regularly to report progress and submit timesheets

 Connect mentee to long-term support networks

 Commit to your assigned mentee for the entire duration of your service term

Time Commitment-

We ask that our volunteers commit to a duration of at least 3-6 months. Mentors and mentees will agree to a more detailed schedule at their first meeting, allowing for a minimum of eight hours a month. Mentors must also attend a volunteer and unacommpanied minor orientation and submit to a background check.
