Overview:
Local volunteers offer a unique insider's perspective to our hostel guests. By leading walking tours, volunteers create the opportunity for hostellers to learn more about the historical and cultural relevance of the area and have a one on one encounter with a local expert.
We are looking for volunteers to lead walking tours to all of the free and great things that New York City has to offer. Our location is three block from Central Par, we have wide variety of walking tours to Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, the Staten Island Ferry, and other locations. We have training, orientation on all walking tours so we can train you to become a solid walking tour guide from novice to expert.
Initial Impact:
- Add a local perspective to the guest experience.
- Provide a fun outdoor activity for hostellers.
Sustainable Outcome:
- Be part of HI-USA's ongoing effort to open our local community to travelers, highlighting our unique history and culture.
- Strengthen our repertoire of fun and exciting group activities offered to guests on a regular basis.
Training and Support:
- Orientation on programs and activities provided by HI-USA.
- Training on group facilitation skills.
- Attend at least one HI-USA Walking Tour to observe process and techniques.
- Script and/or other written materials provided.
- Reports to designated HI-USA volunteer liaison.

We bring travelers together in the largest hostel network in the USA, but that’s just the start: from local tours and experiences, to experiential learning programs, HI USA strives to bring moments of cultural understanding to our guests and community members. HI USA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, member-based organization that reinvests our surpluses back into our hostels and programs so they can have an even greater impact, year after year.
