Duties:
Make regular visits at varying times to your assigned facility.

Identify and investigate problems and resolve complaints made by or for facility residents.

Report electronically on your activities and advocacy.

Participate in ongoing support meetings and follow-up training.

Requirements:
- Submission of an application including personal references
- Minimum age of 21.
- Commit to at least 4-hours a week of service for one year - flexible schedule
- Regular attendance at a monthly two-hour support meeting held locally
- Pass a background check and personal interview

This is a volunteer opportunity for people interested in advocacy, problem solving, conflict resolution and humanitarian outreach. Among the abilities and traits that are useful to Certified Ombudsmen are: effective communication and people skills; good observation, listening and problem-solving skills; patience, objectivity, dependability, assertiveness, perseverance, compassion and empathy. The rewards for this service include the gratitude of facility residents and their families and the personal satisfaction that comes from knowing what a difference your advocacy makes for people at a very vulnerable time in their lives.

Description

Certified Volunteer Ombudsmen ( om·buds·men / ˈȯm-, -bədz-, -ˌmen) work as a team to advocate for the rights and dignity of residents who are elderly and disabled living in long-term care facilities. Ombudsmen are the voice of the consumer and work to make the system responsive to individual needs and wishes. Ombudsman investigate and resolve problems collegially until resident concerns have been resolved.

There are many facilities in need of a volunteer to advocate for residents living in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and adult foster homes. Residents have no one to watch out for them or speak up when things go wrong: call lights go unanswered, meals arrive cold or medications are given incorrectly.

Volunteers enjoy a flexible schedule, seeing the difference they make for the resident, local training and support, an opportunity to expand learning and meet like-minded people. You don’t have to be an expert-you just have to care. Great training and a team environment come with the job. Make a difference today as a volunteer Ombudsman.
