Summer program

We're seeking educators and helpers! We offer a variety of classes and projects with a focus on health and nutrition, food access, healthy shopping/food prep on a budget, gardening, and more. MANY agencies in our county request these classes. We need volunteers to train as educators, act as assistants, take on responsibility for physical projects, and help us offer these important skills to our community.

If you are interested in teaching, you will receive professional training-our curriculum is solid and easy to use. We typically train new volunteers through shadowing; you will watch and co-teach with one of our educators, which our volunteers find very helpful. You will be given research-based information and learn how to share this information with others using discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on group activities. The training is free and will be conducted at our office in Burlington as well as at social service agencies where we currently offer classes.

If you are interested in assisting or helping with physical projects, we have a range of opportunities. One need is for an experienced gardener to assist and support onsite preschool gardens, and to offer tastings of fresh local produce to parents during pickup/drop off at preschools. There are many exciting opportunities!

Aside from helping your community (which we find VERY important), this volunteer position is also a good opportunity to include teaching and education experience on a resume.

Also--we don't have a single Spanish speaking volunteer but we would absolutely love to welcome a Spanish speaker to our team!

Some of the agencies we serve: Head Start Preschools, Family Promise, SeaMar, Goodwill, numerous local elementary schools, low income housing sites, and much more.

Mission Statement

Ideas for Living is a community education program in which trained facilitators present classes to clients of social service agencies and to members of other selected groups and organizations including schools and food banks. The participants are individuals who would benefit from learning new skills which they can use to improve their day-to-day lives. The goal of each presentation is to enhance skills and self-esteem by validating participants’ present knowledge and providing research-based information.

Description

Ideas for Living has been around since 1993. It was created in response to requests from social service agencies for help teaching life skills to their clients. We offer a variety of different classes with topics including: consumer skills, healthy eating, food safety, physical activity and healthy aging. The classes are taught at local social service agencies. Most participants are adults who receive some form of public assistance. Our goal is to help them learn new ideas they can start using right away to achieve a healthy lifestyle and cope with life’s challenges.

Ideas for Living classes are very informal. We meet in small groups around a table. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the activities, and we have great discussions. At the end of class many feel they have made new friends and are eager to try the ideas they have learned. We believe these classes really do help people make better decisions about how to lead a healthier lifestyle. It is especially rewarding to receive their heartfelt thanks for the time you spent with them and the information you shared.

You will receive professional training on food safety, our health and wellness curricula, and group facilitation techniques. You will be given research-based information and learn how to share this information with others using discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on group activities. The training is free and will be conducted at our office in Burlington as well as at social service agencies in Skagit County where we currently offer classes.
