National Runaway Safeline (NRS) was established in 1971. Mission: To Keep America's runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth safe and off the streets. More than 100 trained volunteers serve as "the heart of NRS". Crisis line volunteers (liners) are responsible for providing crisis intervention services through 1-800-RUNAWAY hotline or 1-800RUNAWAY.org online services. Liners are trained to provide solution focused crisis intervention and support for callers and online chatters in a non-judgmental and empowering manner. Utilizing our national resource database, crisis contacts are connected to shelter, food, and mental health services as needed. The Home Free program conducted in collaboration with Greyhound Lines, provides over 400 free bus tickets each year to reunite runaway and homeless youth with families and other support networks. The training program consists of 41.5 hours of instruction, discussion, role-plays, and on-the-job training in the 12 station crisis services center. All training activities support the liner in learning effective active listening and crisis intervention skills. Upon completion of training, volunteers must commit to a minimum of 2 hours per week for at least one year. Liners must be at least 16 years of age, and have good computer and typing skills.
12-20 Liners are scheduled from 8:00a - 10:00p daily, including Saturday and Sunday. We understand that home/work/school/health are primary responsibilities, and so sometimes liners may need to cancel a shift, and look to pick up another shift soon after.
