All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and pass a federal background check.

When a person does not have the understanding to make their own decisions or a child's parents cannot care for them, another person can apply to be their legal 'Guardian’. It is the Guardian’s job is to watch over that person (the ward) and make sure that they are properly taken care of.

The Court Visitor's job is to "check-in" with individuals who have been placed under legal guardianship. The vast majority of our clients are in wonderful situations, and that is what we hope to find when we visit. It is our goal to make sure everything is still going as well, if not better than, it was when the guardianship was granted.

The Court Visitor is assigned a case, and makes a one-time visit to the guardian and the ward. After the visit, the volunteer fills out a report indicating the status of the ward and any recommendations for action. The volunteer's report is then reviewed by the Guardianship Monitoring Coordinator to determine whether further action is necessary.

While our office is located in Boise, we also have cases located throughout the county and the Court Visitor chooses which area they would like to assist in covering. Visits outside of Ada County are completed by telephone and can be done in our office or in your own home. Volunteers choose their own schedule and amount of time they are able to dedicate to the program.
