Do you love Ballet? Are you interested in being part of an exciting community arts organization dedicated to excellence in youth dance education? SDCYB is governed by a Board of Directors with a growing Advisory Council who oversee the organization’s operations and make provisions for the continued success of SDCYB. Board Members and Advisory Council members are esteemed members of the community who share their expertise in administration, finance, law, education, and the arts to further the mission and reach of San Diego Civic Youth Ballet.

As we celebrate our growth, we also recognize that we have an opportunity to enhance our organization by adding new members who can help capitalize on our momentum and make our organization even stronger. Board and Advisory Council members participate in one or more committees, attend the Annual Meeting each fall and are encouraged to join the Annual Retreat in the spring. We are seeking individuals who can bring unique expertise to further the mission and reach of San Diego Civic Youth Ballet.

Requirements & Benefits of serving as an SDCYB Board Member or Advisory Council member:

• Bring extensive professional experience with significant leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, finance, legal and/or the nonprofit sector

• Gain and contribute new perspectives and experience while drawing on the skills and knowledge of directors/advisors who have practical experience in growing a business.

• Review/monitor/assess a specific program, serve as an advocate for the organization, as requested, to the community it serves.

• Provide feedback to the organization from the community, provide technical expertise, offer an independent/unbiased sounding board, and assist staff in determining important activities.

• You will meet interesting people who will add to your sphere of influence while serving as an advocate for the organization and the community it serves.

• Have a fun experience that enriches your resume contributing to the success of the organization.

Specific Role of an SDCYB Board Member:

Board Directors have the capacity to help SDCYB advance our mission and vision, and add diversity to our understanding of the communities we serve. In governing, Board members should be prepared to act in the three general modes of fiduciary responsibility, strategic planning and governing oversight.

Key Board Member Responsibilities:

• Providing governance and oversight to the organization, and serving as a trusted advisor to the CEO as s/he develops and implements SDCYB’s strategic plan

• Actively promote the organization through professional contacts and seek corporate and individual donations to the organization. Contribute to the annual Give or Get Policy of $250

• Bring potential supporters to SDCYB programs and events and provide the staff with introductions to contacts

• Participate in at least one Committee

• Length of term: Three years, which may be renewed once for up to a maximum of two consecutive terms, pending approval of the Board.

• Commit to bi-monthly Board meetings on the third Wednesday of the month at 5:30pm and Committee meetings on the interim months with a varied schedule based on Committee. Meetings typically last 1-2 hours. Meetings are typically held in Balboa Park, San Diego and currently held virtually through the Zoom platform.

Specific Role of the Advisory Council:

An Advisory Council is a collection of individuals who bring unique knowledge and skills which augment the knowledge and skills of the formal board of directors in order to more effectively guide the organization. The Advisory Council does not have formal authority to govern the organization, that is, the Advisory Council cannot issue directives which must be followed. Rather, the Advisory Council serves to make recommendations and/or provide key information and materials to the board of directors.

Key Advisory Member Responsibilities:

• Serve on one or more Advisory Council Committees and Ad Hoc committees when needed.

• Effectively supplement the staff and board's skills and abilities to help guide the organization toward its stated mission

• Consult with Board Committee members, staff, or the Board as appropriate.

• Invitation to attend performances, and special events including the Annual meeting each September and Strategic Planning retreats, as scheduled.

• There are no term limits to membership on the Advisory Council and may serve as the Board determines appropriate.

• Commit to bi-monthly meetings with a varied schedule based on the Committee. Meetings typically last 1-2 hours. Meetings are typically held in Balboa Park, San Diego and currently held virtually through the Zoom platform.

SDCYB Committees:

• Finance committee: Provides financial oversight. Responsibilities include: Planning, Reporting Analysis, Investment oversight, reviewing and updating internal financial controls and approving the annual taxes and audit.

• Governance Committee : Oversees and ensures the organization's adherence to governance policies as stated in the organization's bylaws. It's responsibilities include: making recommendations to the board on governance policies, practices and procedures.

• Personnel & Risk Management: Supports SDCYB staff with all aspects and issues related to personnel/HR management policies and practices. In addition, the committee provides support to identify, manage and mitigate risks for the organization.

• Fundraising & Development: Supports the Board and staff to advance the visibility of the organization and raising funds through events and donor cultivation.

• I.D.E.A (Inclusion. Diversity. Equity, Accessibility): Identify the inclusion and diversity strengths, issues, and opportunities within all aspects of SDCYB and assist in developing strategies and plans to examine ways in which include and exclude SDCYB constituents.
• Innovation: Bring various expertise and diversified resources while increasing the capacity within the organization for bot h board and staff in areas of advocacy, policy, safety/security, technology, database structure, marketing, and strategy, partnerships, etc. Serves as a "think-tank" for the organization.
