Northern Plains Ballet was founded in 1998 as a non-profit corporation in Bismarck, ND offering instruction in dance and choreography to area students. In 2003 it launched a professional company that provides the area with a 3 to 4 production annual season. Students of the dance academy are included in some of the professional company productions.

Volunteer opportunities exist in connection with all productions, including set, prop, and costume construction, as well as ushering and concession sales at all performances. Northern Plains Ballet also holds two to three fundraising events annually, at which volunteers are needed in connection with outreach activities.
