Mission Statement
The mission of Operation P.E.A.C.E. Inc. is to develop the community by empowering families to be self-sufficient by developing literacy, vocational, and technical skills in adults; by nurturing entrepreneurial and leadership skills in our youth; and by reaching out to and encouraging our aging seniors to be active and remain a vital part of the community.
Description
Operation P.E.A.C.E. serves the metro Atlanta area Old Fourth Ward communities. These communities are low-income and located within the Renewal Communities formerly called the Federal Empowerment Zone. Over 90% of the households are headed by under employed/unemployed single mothers receiving section 8 assistance. Operation P.E.A.C.E. provides a Computer Competency Training Program consisting of MOUS (Microsoft Office User Specialist), A+ and PC Basic, a Year Round Youth Program consisting of an after school program and summer academy, Teen Mentoring Program, an In-School Suspension Program, a Swinging Seniors Program, a NFTE program (National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship) which pertains to E-Commerce and a GED preparation program. Operation P.E.A.C.E. was recently awarded the Magic Johnson/hp Inventor Center. The Inventor Center is a state of the art computer lab that provides educational enrichment programs in our year-round youth program, technical assistance to youth and adults during open lab hours i.e. research, resume writing, DOL (Department of Labor) and other job search activities and youth/adult training. The Cyber All Stars Membership Club is a unique technology initiative which provides project base training (i.e. building software driven robots) and is designed to help children demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of the computer and other technologies. The project objective is to teach concepts and skills that will empower youth to understand important issues of a technology-based society and exhibit ethical behavior in the use of different technology. A Technology Coordinator guides the students through a carefully structured curriculum that combines short modules in Microsoft Office XP, group discussions, and experimental activities. Through our partnership with Microsoft Corporation, the Cyber All Stars Membership Club remains a successful and innovative technology program. The Cyber All Stars Program is geared towards adapting each student to working in a computer environment and developing competency in using different software applications as business, communication, and educational tools. The program is individually oriented, to accommodate the learning style for students who are more familiar with the computer than others. Participants are not required to bring any materials or purchase any texts. The NFTE Program is for youth ages 13 through 18. Hewlett Packard has teamed up with Operation P.E.A.C.E. to provide this entrepreneurship training. NFTE participants learn the principles of business, and conducting business on the internet. Upon completion, NFTE participants will have a fully developed business plan and will be awarded an e-commerce business licenses provided by Hewlett Packard. We believe the NFTE program provides hands-on interactive learning that is relevant to the real world. Operatin P.E.A.C.E. first began utilizing technology and providing open lab access in 1995 through a generous donation of 15 computers from Wingate Management, property owner of Bedford Pines. Operation P.E.A.C.E. was later awarded the Magic Johnson/hp Inventor Center in 2002. This collaboration has provided resources such as 20 workstations, printers, scanners, cameras and a refurbished room which has made Operation P.E.A.C.E. technology programming a success. To ensure sustainability and continued success of Operation P.E.A.C.E. technology efforts, we have sought out lab adoption from local computer repair companies, and corporations such as Microsoft and Georgia Tech University.
