The purpose of The Friends For The Dearborn Animal Shelter organization is to provide loving care for the shelter's animals, to reunite lost animals with their human companions, to secure quality adoption for companion animals, to raise funds for their medical and other care, and to increase public awareness about the Dearborn Animal Shelter and good animal-care practices.

The Friends For The Dearborn Animal Shelter (FFDAS) was formed in 1993 by a small group of people who wanted to improve the conditions for the animals at the Shelter and promote their adoption into loving homes. The FFDAS is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization working in partnership with the City of Dearborn to provide assistance to the animals at the Dearborn Animal Shelter. The Dearborn Animal Shelter is operated as a City service under the jurisdiction of the Police Department, Ordinance Division. The Shelter has been operated by the FFDAS under contract with the City since 1996. The Dearborn Animal Shelter provides the following services: Adoptions of great pets to quality homes; Reuniting lost pets with their owners; Providing loving care for lost or unwanted animals; Cruelty investigation; Assistance to pet owners. In 2000, the Shelter handled almost 2,500 animals. Although the FFDAS strives to find quality homes for all adoptable animals, our ability to place an animal is sometimes limited by health, temperament, and cage space.
