Mission Statement

Founded in 1990, COSACOSA art at large, Inc. creates new public art specific to the concerns of Philadelphia neighborhoods in direct, long-term collaboration with city residents.

Through our multidisciplinary art and media projects, COSACOSA reasserts art's original role as a catalyst for community dialogue, creative cooperation, and positive change.

We promote parity among people of diverse backgrounds and differing abilities, while building citizen participation in local communities, as well as in society at large.

Our focus is on young people living in some of our city's most challenged neighborhoods.

Description

COSACOSA designs innovative programs to deliver interactive "dialogues through art" directly into Philadelphia neighborhoods. We serve the full range of our city's diverse cultures and communities, concentrating on those individuals and areas traditionally underserved by arts and cultural organizations.

COSACOSA engages people of differing backgrounds to work together toward a common goal through participatory art-making. In the past twenty years, COSACOSA has brought together thousands of citizens from over thirty Philadelphia neighborhoods to learn about art, about each other, and about how to work together.

Each project identifies a community issue to explore through one of many possible artistic disciplines -- from mosaics to music, from painting to poetry, from interactive theater to an intercommunity gardens. Collaborating with professional artists, city residents strategize, design, and create new works of, by and for their communities.

Art can honor our past, inspire our present, and challenge us to create the future we'd like to see. COSACOSA's goal is the education of our citizenry and the empowerment of our city's neighborhoods -- that the project participants will continue to work together for a better future, within and without the boundaries of their own cultures and communities.
